It is now 8 pm on the 25th February 2005. 153 years ago the Birkenhead will be steaming across False Bay outward bound from a very rushed stop at Simon's Town Royal Naval base for Port Elizabeth. Tomorrow, 26th February 2005 at 10 am there is a commemmorative service at the Birkenhead Memorial at Danger Point Lighthouse. This is arranged by the local Gansbaai Tourism Committee with the Cape Town branch of the Royal Naval Association playing the main part. This evening it is calm, as it was when she sailed in 1852, but tomorrow the South Easter is forecast to blow hard, as usual! If only that wind was blowing that fateful night the white water over "The Rock" would have been easily seen by the 2 look-outs posted on the bow. My Regiment, THe Royal Highland Fusiliers (previously The 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers, 71st and 74th (Highland Light Infantry) have a display on the Birkenhead in our Regimental Headquarters museum at 518 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow G2 3LW. There is also a display at the Maritime Museum in The V & A Waterfront here in Cape Town. Many thanks to those who run this website. From the entries in the Guest Book it certainly seems well accepted. Many thanks also to the continuing interest of the good people of Gansbaai, near Danger Point, and to the Overberg Council for tarring the bad 3 miles of road right up to the lighthouse. This was much aided by the Firm of Irvin and Johnston who have the fish "Farm" at the Point. I am sorry there seems not to be the number of "hits" recorded but I am not too good on these things!! There were over 3000 about a year ago!

Very interesting site...I looked it up because I'm here staying at the Birkenhead Hotel in Hermanus, looking out over the very sea where the Birkenhead perished. A massive tragedy for the Royal Navy at the time, and yet another example where the British tradition of men facing immediate and sudden mortal danger are able to exhibit such control and strength of training and character. It was these traditions that contributed so much to the establishment of Empire(whether you think that 's a good thing or not) May they rest in peace.

Should there be more detail on the women and children who were all saved. Who were they...why were they there etc.

Terrific Site. My Wifes G G Grandfather sailed on the ship when it was known as HMS Vulcan. He was in the 43rd Light Infantry and sailed to S.Africa where he was accidently shot by one of his own sentries and later died of his wounds at Fort Grey. His daughter, Margaret Haddick was born on board 29/11/1851 and her middle name was Vulcan!

What would we do without tributes to our heroes. I become choked up with welled up emotion everytime I visit this site of my lost family. Wish there was a cemetary where we could locate them (for those of us who never had the earthly pleasure of meeting them personally - they died so long before our birth). A wonderful job with, no doubt thousands of hours of tireless research and work put into this site. In memory of yourselves.

I am at present reading my grandfather's diary starting on August 14th 1914, when he sailed from Liverpool on board the armed merchant cruiser H.M. Empress of Britain. He talks about the troops facing the enemy in the trenches and "facing to their front" and quotes from Kipling "to stand stock still to the Birkenhead drill" I was quite moved and wanted to find out more about the Birkenhead, hence finding this site.

In connection with my earlier posting (below) may I clarify..for those who may be interested...that the correct title of the record is :- 'The Wreck of a Troopship' and it was issued by Zonophone Records no. X-41027. The sounds also include ; bugle calls, words of command, hymn singing, and a rendering of Rule Britannia !

Some years ago I bought an old single sided descriptive gramaphone record entitled, 'The Death of a Troopship' which appears to re-enact the sinking of HMS Birkenhead. The 74th foot in particular are mentioned by name. The sinking is very dramatic with lots of sound effects of crashing waves and ships sirens and rocket firing...'as the ship sinks below the waves with all troops standing to attention'! For some years I was unable to find out anything about this record, which did not mention the Birkenhead by name, but a chance discovery of a memorial in St.Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, put me on the right lines. This commemorative record probably dating from 1900 - 1910 must have been issued around the time of the 50th aniversary of the sinking in 1852.

An excellent site, It is a privelidge to be a small part of a nation that produced men of this stature, an excellent testimony to training, spirit and steadfastness. The Birkenhead rules were later regarded as holy writ and their sacrifice was repaid in the many lives saved since. The modern Army and Navy still respect their memory, and so should we civilians

I'm a member of one of the modern successors to the 6th Regiment of Foot.

The story of the Birkenhead is one which recruits in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers are taught at a very early stage in their training, and is used as an example of what every one of should aspire to.

This is an excellent site, and I have added a link to you on my own Regimental history website.

We are doing a report for school on the Birkenhead. We heard a story about the ship and wanted to find out more, it lead to doing a report. We are proud to know that the men on the ship said "Women & Children first." We want to grow up to be men like that.

I am direct descendant of J.R. Howard (my great grandfather) who survived the wreck of the H.M.S. Birkenhead.

Depending upon source document viewed, he is listed both as "Boy" and as Gun Room Cook. Also on board was my great great grandfather, John Howard who perished at sea.

Thanks for a great resource and website!!

Very interesting. I had been looking for a book on the Birkenhead, but now I found most of what I wanted to know on your website. Thank you. A suggestion: perhaps you should inform the visitors of your website of the existence of the quite interesting and unique shipwreck museum in Bredasdorp, a place not to be missed by the kind of people who are interested in the Birkenhead.

Extraordinary occurrences during my life resulted in me engaging in "past life" regression sessions. Months of research in order to determine some conclusion, led me to the Birkenhead. Dates - times - names - emotions - coincidences and visions, indicate and have strengthened my belief that I was Robert Salmond. I have tried to dispel this theory but am only reassured each time I gain more information.
