| FLOWER POWER AT FERNKLOOF NATURE RESERVE |
The Fernkloof Nature Reserve, 1800 hectares of pristine mountain
and coastal fynbos, is the venue for the annual Hermanus
Wildflower Festival, which takes during the Whale Festival from
23 to 26 September.
Hundreds of specimens will be on display from the reserve
and surrounding areas. The reserve is the home of
1600 mountain and coastal species – more than in the
entire United Kingdom. It is an integral part of the Cape
Floral Kingdom, one of the six recognized Floral Kingdoms
in the world and there is no other place on earth where so many
species can be seen growing in such close proximity.
This Hermanus ‘hot spot’ has more than fifty kilometres of
graded paths to help you view both whales breaching in the
blue sea and rare botanical flora such as Roridula gorgonias
the biggest carnivorous plant in the world. A tiny hut on
top of Galpinkop can be booked through the Botanical Society for
an overnight adventure.
At the festival a new outside feature will be a series of mini
indigenous gardens flowing into the parkland area. Special show
project this year will be the Fernkloof Flower Path, the
establishing of wheelchair friendly paths and gardens in the
parkland area. Donations to this project will be welcome. Please
send your contribution to Hermanus Botanical Society, Fernkloof
Flower Path Project, PO Box 208, Hermanus 7200.
