WHALE FESTIVAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT IN MT PLEASANT

The newly formed Soccer Club in Mt Pleasant is planning a soccer tournament during the annual Whale Festival.
The event is going to take place over two days. It starts on Heritage Day, 24 September 2004 and will run until Saturday 25 September 2004. The fields at
Mt Pleasant Sports Fields will be used.

The Soccer Club plans a Six-a-Side youth tournament on Heritage Day with play-offs against senior teams from Zwelihle, Mt Pleasant and Hawston. The finals will take place on Saturday 25 September.
Community organizations and churches are invited to put up stalls around the field for fundraising. Stalls holders are requested to register their stalls at a cost of R10-00 with Suzette Cornelius. She can be contacted on 072 540 9314.

Everyone is invited to come and attend this community day at the Mt Pleasant Sport Fields. No entry fee will be charged.

BODYBOARDING COMPETITION - BOLAND vs WP

The South African Body Boarding Championships Finals are taking place during the last week of September hosted by Western Province.
All the top body boarders from all over South Africa are coming to take part in this competition. After the event, the National Team is elected to participate overseas.

The Boland Body Boarding Association has decided to resume the old tradition of an annual challenge between WP and Boland again this year. This competition is taking place on Heritage Day, (24 September 2004) at Onrus Beach – if the waves allow it. Otherwise it will be moved to a more fitting venue. This event will also be used as a practice run before the SA Finals.

This competition is by invitation only and only members of the two teams, ( WP and Boland) can participate. It will be a great spectator event as some of the top riders of the country will be in action! After the success of the recent Big Wave competition being staged by the Boland, riders are keen to come to Hermanus. The Big Wave Competition that took place at Bay View in July will feature in various Body Boarding Magazines during the month of August and this will attract more attention to the Hermanus area.

NETBALL TOURNAMENT
The Hermanus Netball Club are hosting their annual Whale Festival Tournament for the fourth time this year at the Hermanus High School. The tournament takes place on the same day as the marathon – also at the High School on Saturday 25 September 2004.

TENNIS CLINIC
For the past four years a tennis development clinic for young people has been held at the Mt Pleasant courts. This year the Whale Festival is taking the development tennis clinic closer to the participants and a clinic will take place in Zwelihle at the Zwelihle Sport Fields on Heritage Day (24 Sept) and also on Saturday the 25th. The next week end, on 2nd and 3rd October a similar clinic will be hosted at Hawston Sport Fields. Transport is a big problem for the children and as a result many children were excluded from the event in the past.
Both Zwelihle and Hawston have tennis courts but they were badly neglected and in a bad condition. The Hawston tennis courts were recently upgraded and the Whale Festival negotiated with the Municipality to fix the fence at the Zwelihle courts in order for the clinic to take place in Zwelihle. Both the Hawston and Zwelihle Sport Councils have promised their support for the event.

Students from the University of Stellenbosch, under the leadership of Ms Rennie Rose-Inneswill once again coach the young ones. The Whale Festival is also trying to make contact with Tennis South Africa to see if they can supply coaches that can do coaching on a continuous basis. In Hawston a need for adult coaching was identified. If there are sufficient participants, a separate time will be allocated to coach the adults over the festival.

MT PLEASANT RUGBY DAY
The Mt Pleasant Family Rugby Day is taking place on Saturday 2 October at the Mt Pleasant Rugby Fields.
This is the base of the Atlantics Rugby Club – a force to reckon with this year.
A youth team and possibly a women’s team will play in the morning while the senior teams will take on each other in the afternoon. The opposition is not finalized yet since the final schedule of the
Union is not available yet. Details will be available later.

Community and church organizations are invited to set up stalls to raise funds and to add to the festive atmosphere.
