Ataraxia is one of the newer farms in the area, having been founded in 2004 by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Hanli. The 47 hectares of prime vineyard land called The Skyfields is located on a unique, elevated section of the Valley that offers up beautiful views and excellent growing conditions, conditions that have helped to create some incredible wines boasting balance, depth and finesse.

The vineyards themselves are planted on elevated, predominantly south facing slopes, with soils that dictate which grape cultivars are planted. After meticulous study and research, Kevin decided that the best wine “vehicles” to express this terroir were Chardonnay and Pinot noir. His belief is that “the more pure the voice of the soil, the more interesting the wine” – Michael Chiarello.

Nestled amongst manicured vineyards at the foot of the imposing Babylonstoren mountain range, visitors will find the Ataraxia Wine Lounge. The views from here have been described as “…one of the most spectacular and dramatic positions in the whole wine world”, and rightly so. Built as a chapel in the vernacular architectural style of the region, it offers a place for visitors to relax whilst tasting the four vintages on offer – an unwooded Sauvignon Blanc, a wooded Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and a red blend called Serenity. The views from the balcony or the luxurious lounge are breath-taking, adding to an experience that is guarenteed to leave an idelibly satisfying impression on all visitors.

Bouchard Finlayson was established in 1989, making it one of the oldest farms in the area. This beautiful boutique winery is dedicated to the making of excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines, with years of experience backing this award winning brand. Bouchard Finlayson’s flagship wine is the Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, which has won many an award and accolade. Growing on the slopes of Galpin Peak, repeated vintages of this path-blazing wine continue to reflect a true celebration of Pinot-crafting, consistently endorsing the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley as a jewel in the hunt for this illusive grape. 

Bouchard Finlayson is renowned as one of South Africa’s top wineries and this can be attributed to their philosophy and focus to produce wines of the finest quality.

The winding road up to the farm makes its way past breathtaking vineyards and views, arriving at the tasting room near the top of the estate. From here visitors can look out over some of the famous vineyards or take in the crisp clean air of the valley. Tastings take place inside the cellar, surrounded by casks of delectable, maturing wines. Along the face brick walls of the main room is a variety of beautiful wines to both taste and purchase, each with their own distinct flavours and history.

The tastings consist of six wines, giving interested buyers a chance to experience a taste sensation with some of the best wines in the area. For the more energetic and curious wine lovers there is now a unique wine tasting excursions that combines a scenic guided nature walk through the 100 hectares of protected Fynbos with a tasting of its latest vintages, as well as a delicious Bouchard Brunch Board that includes fresh bread, olives, cheese and deli meats – to be enjoyed in the cellar on the terrace.

The venue is perfect for a large group to enjoy, whilst also still being intimate enough for smaller groups and/or couples

In 2002 two wine lovers partnered up to create Domaine des Dieux. With hours upon hours of dedication, love and expertise they were able to create an award winning brand of MCC, the first producer of such in the Hemel en Aarde region. Through this success they found their dreams becoming a reality. Four years later (in 2006), after patient waiting and care, the vines were finally ready for the production of their maiden Claudia Brut MCC (released in 2010) and Rose of Sharon Brut Rose MCC (released in 2011). In 2007 the next chapter began for this boutique wine farm with the production of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Syrah/Mourvedre blend.

The farm itself is a small area but offers up a vast array of both wines and award-winning MCC. These wines are all produced with the same fundamentals that the great French and Europeans executed; age old traditions that are still producing renowned wines in present day. To insure that all of their wines reach their full potential the vintages are aged in cellars until the winemaker is happy with the quality – giving wine lovers the same high quality in every bottle.

Tasting these cultivars is also a joy at their quaint but modern tasting room. Since December 2013 Domaine Des Dieux has been operating its tastings from its new Tasting Room, with breath taking views of the valley and surrounding vineyards. As the last stop along the official Wine Route it’s fitting that this facility is quiet, and even rejuvenating, giving visitors a sense of the peace and tranquillity experienced by all those that live and visit the Valley.

In 2002 Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin took up the challenge of establishing a winery in a remote corner of the Walker Bay Wine Region. The 40 hectares of rolling land on the mountainous slopes of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge had never been planted to vines before, but recognising the vast potential, they set out with tenacity and determination to transform it into a model wine farm. Nowadays the farm and restaurant are a popular stop along the Wine Route.

Situated high up the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus, Creation’s vines climb the steep hills of Babylon Toren Mountain to a lofty altitude of 350 metres above sea level. Here they bask in generous sunlight, flourish in 450-million-year-old clay loam soils with decomposed Bokkeveld shale and these factors result in full-flavoured grapes of outstanding quality, allowing for the creation of complex wines with length and depth.

Creation is also a member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) and is committed to conserving the natural heritage of the area by implementing long-term biodiversity as well as sustainability programmes. The farm also complies with the sustainability guidelines laid down by the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme and all our recent releases boast the proud ‘green seal’.

Creation’s tasting area has been built according to the owner’s preference – in a location that best exhibits all that Creation and the area has to offer. The tastings includes canape wine and food pairings, secret wine and food pairings as well as a 10 AM brunch pairing. The modern and bright structure opens up onto wide balconies and a small garden in which visitors are welcome to enjoy their wine tastings and pairings whilst being surrounded by beautiful artworks and architecture that create the overall impression of light and elegance, something that Creation has always aimed to achieve in both their wines and their food.

Hamilton Russell was the first wine estate to be planted in Walker Bay and was founded by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975, carving out a reputation as a winery of both old and new traditions. Their two varieties of wine are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as the vineyard chooses to focus on a more traditional approach by only producing a few varieties rather than the “new style” approach of producing many varients on the same amount of soil.

This approach has not only won the winery many awards but has also helped to set a very high standard for any and all wines produced and sold in the area. Not surprisingly, quality is another big sticking point for Anthony Hamilton-Russell, who admits "the reason we became an estate was so that we could do stupid things financially in the name of quality." Following that line of thinking, Hamilton-Russell does not believe in reserve wines. "If you have a reserve, what does that say about the quality of your other wines? Why should you produce a lesser quality grape or a lesser vintage?"

Both wines are single varietal (non-blended) and can be tasted and enjoyed at the beautiful Hamilton Russell tasting room. The location is peaceful and picturesque, with weeping willows bordering their private damn, which the tasting room overlooks. Enjoying a glass of vino becomes a different experience while sitting along the balcony or listening to the historic background of the farm and its wines.
