The name originates from the founder of Hermanus, Hermanus Pieters, who, in 1855, helped take a little fisherman’s village and turn it into the town it is today. This name has given them the title of longest Afrikaans name for a cellar in the world. Their wines are just as uniquely named, with the HPF brand being the only wine cellar in South Africa to use Afrikaans-only names. The non-serious attitude has also led to a well-loved reputation as a fun and laid-back winery, with the owner commenting  that “while we don’t take ourselves seriously, we’re serious about making good wines”.

Their 350-ton wine cellar is a testament to this, a cellar that stems from many years of experience from their winemaker, Bartho Eksteen. He’s gained world-wide experience and has used this to help create some amazing and award winning wines. The grapes used for these famous vintages are brought down from their cool-climate BWI champion farm in Sondagskloof, as their philosophy is “Good Earth makes Better Wines”.

Located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Village, at the beginning of the Wine Route, this beautiful tasting room and cellar make for a perfect stop along the way. HPF offers visitors a variety of tastings to appreciate all of the delicious wines on offer, from a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc to a full bodied Borduex-style blend. Locals and visitors alike can also look forward to the weekly Saturday HPF Kos en Wynmark (Food and Wine Market) that has all of their best wines on offer alongside delicious foods and treats.
