The water is waist deep and pleasantly warm in the summer months. Although winds vary, they are generally on the lighter side, which is perfect for beginners but no lessons take place when the wind gets stronger than 20 knots.

The school provides all equipment, such as a wetsuit, kites, lines, a harness, impact jacket and a hard hat. The course is divided into three sections with a minimum of 2 hours spent on each section. This is necessary to communicate all the required safety precautions as well as get you ready for your first unaided trip. This means that you will have to do a minimum of 6 hours before you will be able to kite-board safely on your own. The lessons are worth it though, as you will soon feel the exhilaration of navigating the shores of the lagoon at speed.

Shark Cage Diving has grown exponentially in popularity over the last few year and is undeniably one of the most thrilling experiences on the planet and not for the faint of heart. In the Overberg region, Shark Cage Dives are conducted from Gansbaai, situated approximately 40 minutes outside Hermanus. A number of tour operators offer shark cage diving trips and pre-booking is essential.

Although an adrenaline pumping experience, the activity is extremely safe and if all the safety precautions are taken and followed it will become one of your best memories. These dives take place in the picturesque Kleinbaai Harbour with full wetsuits and caging supplied. Diving equipment is also supplied, along with an optional DVD of your experience. All trips are weather and tide permitting and divers and non-divers can enjoy this fascinating excursion. No prior diving experience is required.

This is an experience worth having, if only to get up close and personal with the sea's most terrifying and magnificent predators.

Thanks to Hermanus’ coastal location you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. There are several smaller beaches that can be found along our coast, from Fick’s Pool all the way into Voelklip, or you can visit Grotto Beach in Voelklip, which has Blue Flag status as well as a vast stretch sandy beaches to relax along.

Hermanus is also packed with many idyllic picnic spots to rest up and refuel at. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve Gardens have beautiful shady lawns and a playground, whilst the Old Harbour ampitheatre offers plenty of grassy seating options near the play area and Marimba Band that performs in season.

If you’d like a pre-packed picnic basket with some freshly made goodies then feel free to get in contact with the Eatery in Hermanus.

Sand-boarding is definitely more geared towards the adrenalin junkies. Racing down a sand dune at high speeds on a thin board might make some feel faint, but for those searching for thrills during a holiday, this up-and-coming adventure sport in South Africa is a must do.

It is similar to snowboarding as you can choose to stand with two feet locked onto a board whilst sliding down a sand dune at high speeds. However, if you feel that this is a bit beyond your capabilities, you have the choice to sit. Lying down is not recommended lest you find yourself swallowing a mouthful of sand. No experience is needed though to take part in this adventure sport, however balance plays a big role. Betty's Bay offers the ideal location for sand-boarding, with its picture-perfect beaches and high sand dunes; a fun activity for families or friends wanting to spend some quality time together.

Paragliding is both a recreational activity and competitive adventure sport. Flyers use paragliders – lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircrafts that use a harness and large kite (like those used by Kite Surfers) - to glide over long distances. The gliders make use of the air flow and manual guiding to manoeuvre the gliders.

The paragliding providers in Hermanus offer both solo and tandem experiences for those wishing to tour the town from above. The breath-taking coastal scenery and beautiful mountains make this an experience of a lifetime; one that will leave anyone with plenty of stories for the future. During the flight, flyers are also privy to the undisturbed wildlife below, including deer, baboons, blue cranes and other wildlife. Swallows, eagles and crows have also been known to fly close to the gliders.

The flight itself usually lasts around 45 minutes and includes a quick safety presentation for newcomers. Overall, the flight is an adrenaline filled one, with plenty to see and take in.
